Rules of the game classic blackjack

There are many different variations on the blackjack game. Below you will find an explanation of the usual terms used at the blackjack table. Next, we will discuss the rules of classic blackjack, we will look at the differences with Pontoon-blackjack and we will tell you about Double Exposure Blackjack and Free Bet Blackjack.

Blackjack online

Betting

As with almost any other game, it doesn’t start until you’ve placed a bet. Both land casinos and online casinos have a minimum stake. Your bet must be equal to or higher than the minimum limit. In a land-based casino, the croupier or someone at the checkout will exchange your money for chips. In an online casino, you deposit money into your account and exchange a certain amount of money for chips at the chosen blackjack game. To bet, first, click on the chips with the desired value, and then one or more times on the betting box to place your bet. When you’re playing at a multiplayer or live table, there’s often a clock indicating how much time you have left to place your bet.

Sharing

Blackjack is a multiplayer game that can be played at one table. You don’t play against the other players, everyone plays against the croupier separately. Once everyone has placed their bets, each player is dealt with two cards. The croupier, a dealer in English, deals the cards clockwise, so from left to right. Each player is dealt with two face-up cards. The dealer is dealt with a face-up and a face-up card.

The value of the cards ranges from 1 to 11 points. Cards 2 to 10 have the same value as the numbers on them. The farmer, woman, and king are worth 10 points. An ace has a value of 1 or 11 points and automatically changes to the most favorable value. Do you take a third card and does it bring you above 21? The value of the ace ‘switches’ from 11 to 1, so you don’t get over 21 and lose automatically.

As described above, Blackjack’s goal is to get as close as possible to the maximum number of points of 21. You play against the croupier, also called the bank or dealer. You win when your cards have a higher value than that of the croupier.
Do you already have 21 points with the first two open cards? Then you have Blackjack! You will then receive one and a half times your bet as a win, so on top of your deposit. Of course, this is not very common and the value of your first two cards is usually lower than 21. What do you do with a score of 14 or 15, for example? You actually want an extra card, but the chance of getting above 21 is considerable. This is where the game strategy comes in.

Hit (buy)

This is the most common action in blackjack. By clicking on the ‘hit’-button the dealer will give you an extra card. Until you have 21, you can ask for an extra card as many times as you like, unless you have used the ‘double’ option. More about this doubling option later.

Stand (passes)

If you don’t have a blackjack or 21 points yet, you can choose ‘stand’. Passing is not difficult, you just need to know when to do it and when not to do it. If you decide to pass too early, there is a good chance that the bank will get a higher score and you will still lose. If you pass too late, there is a good chance that you will exceed 21 points and therefore lose. Reaching more than 21 points is called a ‘bust’, this can happen to both the player and the banker.

Double

This is your most powerful weapon if you use it at the right time of course. Doubling means that you double your bet and receive an extra card. You double the best if you do:

  • 11 points in your hands and the dealer has no Ace.
  • You have 10 points in your hands and the dealer has a card with 2 to 9 points.
  • The dealer has 9 points and the dealer has 3, 4, 5 or 6 points.
  • Ace – 7 or Ace – 6 and the dealer has 3.4 5 or 6 points.
  • have an Ace with a four or a five and the dealer has 4, 5 or 6 points.
  • have an Ace with a two or a three, while the dealer has 5 or 6 points.
  • The dealer has two fives and the dealer has 2 to 9 points.

Split

Are the values of the first two cards the same, for example, two peasants? In that case, you can choose to split the cards. You place your bet a second time and each farmer is provided with an extra card. The rules of the game remain exactly the same as if you had not split. However, there is one exception: if you choose to split two aces, you will only receive one extra card on each ace, just as you did on ‘doubling’ each ace. Do you receive a card with a value of ten points for your ace? You don’t have a blackjack, but ‘just’ 21 points. There’s a good chance that you’ll still take the win!

Insurance (insurance)

If the dealer’s open card is an Ace, you can choose to insure yourself against blackjack. You must then make half of your bet. Does the croupier indeed have blackjack? You will then receive a double refund of your insurance premium. If the dealer does not have blackjack, you will lose the insurance money. Wondering when taking out an insurance policy is favorable or not? You can read it here.

Even Money

Do you have blackjack with your first two cards, but does the croupier also have an ace? Then you have the option Even Money. You’ll then get your bet back once (i.e. double), instead of the 1.5 times you normally get when you’re blackjacked. If you have not used the Even Money option and the bank also has blackjack, you will only get your own bet back.

There are fixed rules for the bank

  • If the bank has 16 points or less, the bank will always take an extra card.
  • If the bank has 17 points or more, it ‘stands’ the bank and no additional cards are ever taken.

No matter what value your cards have, the bank always follows the two rules above. Suppose: you have 19 points, then the bank will still fit 17 points. Do you have 15 and does the bank reach 16? Then a card will be taken. The great thing for you as a player: with that next card the bank can just ‘bust’, so you win!

Win or lose

A win or a loss is calculated after each round. Do you have more points than the bank? Then you get your bet back double. If you have as many points as the bank, you get your deposit back and you win or lose nothing. Do you have fewer points than the bank, or do you have more than 21 points? Then you’ve lost and you’ve lost your bet. Ready for a game of online blackjack?

Rules of the Game Pontoon-Blackjack

Pontoon’s way of playing, also known as Pontoon-blackjack, is something different from that of the regular Blackjack game. Pontoon owes its name to the term of a hand. If you have 21 points with the first two cards, then you have Pontoon.

To start with, the terms are different. For example, you use ‘twist’, ‘stick’, ‘buy’ and ‘split’.

  • Twist = ask for another card
  • Stick = passes
  • Buy = double your bet. You will receive another card.
  • Split = split cards

An important difference with the regular blackjack version is the way the croupier divides. He shares two closed cards and checks if he has Pontoon (21). If that is the case, you immediately lose and the game is over. Even if you also own Pontoon.

Other differences:

  • Tie? Then the dealer wins.
  • You may not choose to pass under 15 points. So you have to argue.
  • Does the dealer have less than 16 points or a soft 17? Then he has to argue.
  • After doubling, you can continue the twisting. With classic blackjack, you only get one card after doubling.
  • 5 card trick: do you have five cards in your hand, without exceeding 21 points? Then you’ll get your bet back twice!

Pontoon’s game rules are the same in almost every online casino. It’s rare for an online casino to develop its own variant. If this is the case, players will be made aware of this and asked to read the different rules of the game first.

Double Exposure Blackjack

We have another variant of the standard blackjack game, namely Double Exposure. The dealer places both cards face up on the table. As an opponent, you then know the points of the bank. In that case, you also know the chance that you will win with certain cards.

Free Bet Blackjack

A blackjack variant that is becoming increasingly popular is ‘Free Bet Blackjack’. This variant was first played in Las Vegas in 2012 and is now being offered by more and more online casinos. Broadly speaking, Free Bet Blackjack is the same as regular blackjack, but all splits and doublings are done for you automatically. Better yet, all splits and doublings are completely free for you as a player. In order to maintain the house edge, the bank no longer loses at 22 points but is automatically a tie.

Out of strategic choice

Normally the choice to split or double is a strategic choice. In this sense, Free Bet Blackjack is a simpler variant, because the choice is always advantageous. If you lose before splitting or doubling, you don’t lose the double bet that is normally the case with blackjack, but only your original bet. In case of a win, you as a player will get your bet back twice.

Although the rules for Free Bet Blackjack also vary from casino to casino, the free doubling usually applies to hands that (after the first two cards) are worth 9, 10 or 11 points. Sometimes it remains possible to still double other hands as well.

For free splitting, it is split on each pair, except for a few 10s (or cards with the same value). This deviates even more from the usual strategy, where especially in case of a high card for the bank it is advised not to split. With Free Bet Blackjack, splitting and doubling will occur more often than is normally the case.

10 Easily Preventable Mistakes

Of course, there are no guarantees for a gambling game, not even for blackjack. However, with this game, you have a lot more control over your fate than when playing roulette, for example. There is much more strategy and statistics involved. Prevent these 10 common mistakes and increase your chances of winning! Read more about blackjack strategy? Here is an interesting article.

Mistake 1: Don’t read the rules before you start playing

You probably never read the manual of your phone, and your phone is working fine. Don’t take this habit to an (online) casino: making mistakes costs you money! Before you start, read through the rules of the game. At most online casinos you can click directly from the console to the rules of the game.

Mistake 2: Playing without basic knowledge of blackjack strategy

You don’t have to be a card counter to gamble at the blackjack table, but make sure you have some idea of what you’re doing. For example, if you think that with a score of 13 or 14, you can choose ‘stand’ against a 9 or 10 of the dealer, some extra gaming knowledge is useful.

Mistake 3: Let yourself be seduced by ‘side bets’

Casinos only offer games that are profitable for the house, including side bets. Side bets are the extra games that you often see on the (online) blackjack table. For example, you can gamble on getting your hands on a pair (e.g. two peasants), or having your two cards together with the dealer’s open card form a street. Although the payouts may look lucrative, don’t let these side bets seduce you: in the long run, you’re guaranteed to lose out!

Mistake 4: Passing on when you should stop

In the face of adversity, you’d better choose to leave the online casino, even if it’s only for a single day or evening. If it’s not your day, it won’t be your day either. Save your credits and continue playing when luck returns to your side.

Mistake 5: Double at 11 when the dealer has an Ace

If the dealer shows you bait, you should always be careful. In this case, choose ‘hit’ and not the usual ‘double’. Do you play a blackjack variant in which the dealer chooses ‘hit’ on soft 17? Then ‘double’ is indeed correct against the dealer’s bait.

Mistake 6: If the dealer has a 2 or 3, stand at 12

It doesn’t seem logical at first glance, but when you have 12 points and the dealer shows you a 2 or 3, it’s best to take an extra card.

Mistake 7: Hit instead of a double with 11 against the dealer’s 10

One of the few advantages that you have over the dealer as a player is that you can double the bet: take advantage of this. With a score of 11 against the dealer’s 10, you are ahead and a doubling is in order.

Mistake 8: Stand on soft 18 while the dealer has a 9

Of course, you don’t want to make a bust out of an 18 score, but with a 38% chance that the dealer’s second card is a 10 or an ace, and so the dealer comes out at 19 or 20, you can’t afford to go for ‘stand’ with soft 18.

Mistake 9: Stand at 16 when the dealer has an Ace

As we mentioned earlier, when the dealer has an ace, you have to be careful. With a score of 16 you don’t have any great cards in your hands, the dealer can easily beat you. So in this situation, it is important that you choose ‘hit’ and receive an extra card. Of course, you run the risk of ‘busting’, but the chance that you will still lose after choosing ‘stand’ is higher.

Mistake 10: Accept insurance or choose Even Money

Like the side bets, insurance and the Even Money option are only positive for the casino itself. The insurance premium is simply too high compared to how often you can expect a payout. Besides, you play blackjack just to make a bet, don’t you? So turn down that insurance!
